Fleets Bay Part 2: Chesapeake Boat Basin and Kilmarnock

After leaving Little Bay we sailed the four and a half miles North to Indian Creek and the Chesapeake Boat Basin. Its an easy run and Indian Creek is very well marked and very pretty.

I stayed there before when my Dad and I sailed here. It’s a great little Marina, very dog friendly, reasonably priced, and in a great location.

They have a free loaner van that we had full use of so we headed up to town to eat. Northern Neck Burger Company is well worth a visit, open late with some great food.

We woke the next day to a changed forecast, the remnants of a Tropical Storm were rolling in. We either had to bail first thing in the morning or stay another night. Jean and grace were keen to check out the shops in Kilmarnock so the decision was made.

After Breakfast at Lee’s Diner, a Kilmarnock institution, we walked around town. Kilmarnock is delightful, full of little shops, art galleries, and restaurants. I would advise not expecting too much to be open on a Monday though…

For the Cruising Sailor there is a Food Lion, CVS, and Walmart just outside town.

No Microwave on Santosha!

After the rain blew through we were treated to this delightful rainbow

Kilmarnock is a great place to visit, especially for cruisers running up or down the bay. The location is perfect as a base and you can pop across the bay to Onnancock or Tangier in a few hours.

Indian Creek has several anchorages that I would like to explore next time I am up this way. Active Captain has some very useful information on these as well as the always excellent “Gunkholers Guide

  1. Hi Rick,

Fleets Bay is a great destination, you could spend a week between Dividing Creek and Antipoison Creek. Tons of great anchorages, only one Marina, so pack supplies.
The Post was rushed this morning, part one was a lot better, there will be a short part 3 and a video out soon.
